The author of the article was R. Colin Johnson, who in turn quotes an article in the "Nikkan-Kogyo newspaper". Sorry I clipped off the page number. It says that the program uses sentence context to pick the appropriate kanji etc. character during phonetic entry, and cuts down manual selection from alternatives by 40%.
