My hard drive has been quiet for a full 30 minutes now.

I have thanked all that replied, but in case anybody else is interested:

There is a grounding strap which rests on the spindle of the hard drive
(it is clearly visible once the drive is removed and turned over).
I adjusted the grounding strap slightly.  The theory being that the 
contact point will change slightly along with the pressure exerted by 
the springy strap.
