A Request of the Folks at Commodore-Amiga:

     If you do anything with the hardware this year, PLEASE:
     -> MAKE THE CIA CHIPS MORE DURABLE! <-
     I powered up my personal Amiga tonight (as opposed to the others in
the house which are not mine) and tried to call in; when I saw too many
lights light up on the modem, I knew immediately: another dead CIA chip.
This is my THIRD dead Commodore CIA chip, and this is one of those tricks
that gets old Really Quickly.
     I shouldn't have to replace an I/O chip every six months. (Or reseat
Fat Agnus either, but extra bracing took care of that problem eventually.)
     And if anybody wonders, yes, I checked to make sure the modem hadn't
blown up. I'm using it right now, on another Amiga. I also tried one of
the other smartmodems on my system; too many lights. The malfunctioning
chip is constantly sending characters out the serial port; basically the
same thing that happened the most recent other time, only before it got
the parallel port and I couldn't print any manuscripts for a week. This is
a big problem when you publish a magazine, even if amateur. :-(
     Anyway. I don't know what can be done about this problem, but surely
SOMETHING can. I'm sick of ordering replacement CIAs; I'm starting to feel
as though I'm going to have to keep a personal stock.
