The SS1 audio is in uLAW (really Mu-LAW) format.  It is a method of
compressing analog waveforms into 8-bit samples.  I previously posted a
program to convert MAC style files (excess-128 samples) into uLAW format
for the SS1.  It's called sound2sun, and is available from the Rice
archive server.
