In general dbm belongs to the BSD world with ndbm introduced in 4.3BSD. ndbm differs from dbm in that multiple database files can be simultaneously open. The other ?dbm packages provide compatible functions for those without ndbm. I believe the GNU version is sdbm. Another version was just posted to one of the source groups (alt.sources).
