I noticed that in a served newsgroup that if you want to read an unread item
and the server fails to deliver it (e.g. server down) then item is neverthe-
less marked 'READ', and the 'unread' counter is decremented.
     
A better scheme might be not to mark something as read until you have actually
read it, rather than when you try to read it.
