I've found that lharc gets roughly 10-15% better compression most of the time, though zip seems to do better on text files. I don't like zip very much because it's huge, and the intuition interface keeps me from using it in a script. It seemed to use godawful amounts of ram, too, though I belive that's because it creates all temporary files in RAM:, and that you can change it if you don't like it.
