I get three or four mailings a year from them trying to suck my money away from me. Byte by Byte has an interesting history about upgrades. Long ago I purchased SA3D and dutifully sent in my registration card. About a month later I received an upgrade without having asked for it, along with a nice letter asking for $5 or $10 to defer the costs. I was so impressed by this that I sent in the bucks. The upgrade in question fixed some rather significant bugs, as I recall. Later, of course, the upgrade from SA3D to SA4D was something like $200. The list of added features in 4D looked more like bug fixes (e.g. working file requesters) and minor enhancements, plus support for expensive video recording equipment. Certainly not worth a $200 upgrade fee for us hobbyists. More recently they offered a $75 upgrade for Sculpt 3D to 3D-XL. The list of added features looked quite good to me, but BbB told me that 3D-XL could not be used with SA3D, and that I should instead shell out 200 bucks to upgrade to SA4D. No sale. I think BbB doesn't yet know how to offer upgrades, at least to the hobbyist market where a hundred dollars is a lot of money. -- -- Alan Bland -- att!druwy!mab == mab@druwy.ATT.COM -- AT&T Bell Laboratories, Denver CO -- (303)538-3510
