HI I asked a similar question about two weeks ago and got one reply.
Being in guam this did not help matters any. 
Anyways get the chinook utilities from a2 central or any other mail
order house for abot 30 bucks.this software will let you set the inter-
leave of your drive,do a low level format ,test for bad blocks and
partiton your drive.It is also the only program that you can get that
will let you lock out the bad blocks it finds.at least as far as i 
know.
when i looked around for a drive i used the following criteria.
i had a chinook external 40 meg scsi drive with apples scsi card 
i wanted to buy another external 80 meg scsi card.a2 central started
selling kits to make your own 80 meg drive. i priced their kit and it
comes to 729.00 without the scsi card.with thier case you can put two
dives if you want.well i looked at hard drives international and they
wanted 599.00 for a 80 meg seagate drive without the scsi card.one year
warratny. i tried several times to get these guys and all i could do was
get placed on hold for about 20 minutes each time i called.let me tell tou
that this pisses me off because phone call from guam are not cheap.also i
figured if i couldn't even get through to order the drive how coild i get
through for tech support.so then i looked at ehman eng. who make drives
for the mac.they wanted 649.00 for a 80 meg seagate with a 2 year limited
warranty.i ordered it and nine days later it was here.i daisy chained it
to my chinook and reformated it with the chinook utilites and it works
like a champ.i can also reccomened the chinook drives.they come with appls
scsi card included but they are expensive when compared to the mac drives.
i prefer them over the internal hardrives like the vulcans because you can
daisy chain them.

well thats my two cents worth. i wish some of the more vocal members of   
this news group would have taken the time to help me instead of arguing
about things like why apple is part of the illumina conspiarcy.
