Normally the circuit has the 120v line go into a transformer, which then has a capacitor and a couple diodes to make the AC transformer output into DC. By removing the bridge, and I guess the cap also, you will basicly have 9v AC output. To make it save though you should reclose the case again by gluing it shut. I cracked one open just to fix one time (the plastic moldes cheapie type) and there really wasn't much to it.
