In the North Sea, the U-22 sinks the destroyer HMS Exmouth, with all hands. This is the twenty-first naval vessel lost by Great Britain since the war's beginning. In addition, 3 British and 3 neutral merchant ships are lost. The Japanese liner Asama Maru is stopped off the Japanese coast by the British cruiser HMS Gloucester. 21 of her passengers, technicians from Germany, are taken aboard the warship, and Japan protests. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bill Thacker military@cbnews.att.com Send submissions for "50 Years Ago" to military-request@att.att.com "We got more material out of this battle than we have had here ourselves and it is all excellent." - unidentified Finnish colonel, speaking of the Battle of Suomussalmi, quoted in Newsweek.
