    There are a number of reasons that the F/A-18 is used.  First of all,
    it is much less expensive than an F-14, just as the F-16 is cheaper
    than the F-15.  Second of all, it has the designation F/A for a reason;
    it is suppossed to be an attack plane that can easily defend itself,
    whereas the only mission the F-14 is used for is to defend the fleet.
