The engine manufacturers have it a bit easier than the aircraft folks, because their products can go up on a variety of birds. The 777, as currently envisioned, basically wants really hefty turbofans -- it's almost 747 size but only two engines -- and those are already cooking for other applications, notably enlarged 747s and DC-10s.
