What about machine vision and invariant object recognition? There are at least 2 NN paradigms for machine vision which give decent results: Widrow's ADALINE's and Malsburg's dynamic link architecture. Malsburg's regime has shown good results for infra-red images of vehicles, and for human faces; and image recognition is invariant under both translation and mild distortion.
