The difference here is the OS. Unix has multi-tasking built in - MS-DOS doesn't. This has nothing to do with the shell and/or utilities. But, after you add all YOUR utilities to MS-DOS the prices go up. Let's take an example (possibly a bad one). ESIX (Everex's unix) is ~$600.00 US including X-Tools.
