When I invoke the shell (as M-x shell) I receive the message "Process shell not running" in the minibuffer (this only started happening today) and if I change buffer to "*shell*", I see the message "Process shell exited abnormally with code 1" in the shell buffer (once for each time I do M-x shell; this has been happening since version 4 of SunOS was installed about a month ago). However the system administrator here has no problems starting up an interactive shell. This suggests to us that it may be a protection/privilege problem. Nevertheless we have been unable to find a solution as yet. Machine/software details are: Sun 3/50 or 3/60 running SunOS 4.0.3_EXPORT GNU Emacs 18.55.6 of Sun Feb 18 1990 on sis-a (berkeley-unix) Has anyone experienced and solved this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please respond directly by email. Evan Ireland (E.Ireland@massey.ac.nz), School of Information Sciences, Massey University, Palmerston North, NZ.
