The reference I have is a lot more than a year old, but perhaps it's still what you're looking for. I believe this is their first paper published on the topic. They probably followed up with other articles in additional publications. Henderson, D.A., Jr. and Card, S.K. "Rooms: The Use of Multiple Virtual Workspaces to Reduce Space Contention in a Window-Based Graphical User Interface" in ACM Transactions on Graphics, Vol. 5, No. 3, July 1986, pages 211-243.
