(I should've thought of that sooner, but it was late and I was a little groggy myself, which was how I got myself into the necessity to reboot from a floppy). No number of warm boots seemed to have worked though. I'd still be interested if someone can tell me just what got corrupted that Ctrl+Alt+Del wouldn't cure and that would cause the error message above.
