There are several networks here: HEAnet (Higher Education Network): The main academic network. Earn (European Academic Research Network): part of the Europe side of Bitnet. Eunet (European Unix Network): part of the Europe side of Usenet. RTCnet (Regional Technical Colleges): another academic network. DInet (Decus Ireland Network): interconnection of DECUS member sites. All of these networks share the .ie top level domain. The namespace is coordinated between these groups. All the networks are interconnected, so they appear seamless to the outside world. The connections to other countries are through three gateways: 1. The Earn gateway (connects to Earn/Bitnet). 2. The Eunet gateway (connects to Eunet). 3. X400 gateway (connects to European academic networks.) The first two are extremely reliable. Earn is connected via leased line, and is generally slightly faster, although problems with the transatlantic link has caused large backlogs recently. The current X400 gateway is only for Domain Defined Attributes, and is not as reliable as the other two. We are hoping to have a full Standard Attribute gateway in place in a matter of weeks. Mail from Ireland to the outside world goes by Earn where possible, as it is connected via leased line and does not have volume charging. Other than that, we would send via Eunet. We do not send any outgoing mail through the X400 gateway, as we don't feel we should pay the PTTs any money that is not necessary. How do you get to Ireland from abroad? For example, suppose you wished to reach t.wade@cc.ucd.ie. 1. From Earn/Bitnet. The .ie domain is registered within Bitnet. You just mail t.wade@cc.ucd.ie. 2. From the Internet. The .ie domain is registered and nameserved from two sites, so you can also mail directly as t.wade@cc.ucd.ie (note that you don't need to source route through cuny like you do for many European domains e.g. t.wade%cc.ucd.ie@cunyvm.cuny.edu despite what the gateway may put in the From: fields for mail originating in Ireland). 3. From Eunet/Usenet. Guess what ? Yes it's registered here too, so you just mail direct. 4. X400 "Ean style" domain defined attributes. You can reach Ireland via the Ean gateway in UCD. 5. X400 "Standard" attributes. Currently there is no standard attribute gateway. We are working on one. For the moment the best thing to do is route the mail to the nearest Earn or Eunet gateway. This will handle the .ie domain. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tom Wade | Internet: T.Wade@cc.ucd.ie Speaker To Vaxes | (& for HEAnet/Bitnet/Eunet domain mailers) Systems Programmer | Domainless (& brainless) mailers: Computer Center | Bitnet/Earn: T_WADE@CCVAX(.bitnet) University College | Eunet/Usenet: ![backbone]!tcdcs!t.wade%cc.ucd.ie Belfield | Dublin 4 | PSI-Mail: PSI%27243154000712::T.WADE Ireland | Janet: t.wade%cc.ucd.ie@EARN-RELAY -------------------| Telex: (0500) 91178 UCD IE ("TO WADE" at start). ---- | X400: [Address Exceeds 65536 byte buffer] / \ | Non-email: ** | Fax: +353-1-838605 ** | Voice: +353-1-693244 Ext 2032 \ / | ---- | Official Disclaimer: "This is not a disclaimer". -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
