Syntax and NCR sell Unix-based servers which also conform to RFCs 1001 and 1002. There are probably at least a few others. Our NetBIOS, compliant with RFCs 1001 and RFC 1002, is a b-node implementation for use across a single LAN, so it does not implement NBNS or NDDS. We have heard of only one m-node Netbios that does so. RFC 1001 describes the additions necessary to make the domain name system usable as an NBNS, but we have heard of no plans to implement it Internet-wide. Currently, such name service administration is carried out by the administrators of the Netbios LAN or LANs, each cable of which may have one or more Scopes. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Frances Kirk Selkirk info@ftp.com FTP Software, Inc.
