I had almost exactly the same experience with the nearest Apple dealer up here. Of course by now I know that this is what to expect. I really don't know what causes the disconnect in information flow to Apple dealers; perhaps Apple really expects all the salemen to study the press releases posted on AppleLink, but if so somebody should tell them it isn't working..
