He basically WAS the design manager of the Mac. He was making most of the design decisions, just as he had done on the Lisa before. He was not laying out circuits or writing the ROM code, but he was the person that controlled the direction of the machine. He hasn't really done any more for the NeXT that you seem to willingly give him design credit for. He isn't a programmer or an engineer, just a concept man. And I don't see what useful purpose or input would be gained by posting Abernathy's note on the NeXT forum. Jobs isn't going to reply, is he.
