An old buddy of mine once told me that there was a bug in the macro handling
in emacs-- something about either a maximum number or maximum size, sorry I
don't remember which it was.  This may not be of any help, but something about
100 sticks in my mind.  I'm sorry I can't be more definite, but it's been quite
a while.
