If you want an easy 2400 baud modem, aprotek makes one that plugs into the 
commodore 64 or 128 directly.  It sells for around $80 mail-order.  However,
there have been reports of problems with the 64 at 2400 baud.

For terminal software, there are may PD/Shareware programs that are inexpensive,
powerful, and easy to use.
