I've got a PRO 350 at home that also uses RX50 disks, and like your VAXen it needs pre-formatted disks. I did discover though that the DECmate II (using the standard WPS software) can fully format RX50 disks. The disk will need to be initialized, which your VAX should be able to do (the 350 can).
