For $10 you can get the library source like I did and find out how printf, malloc, etc. work. It has routines for DOS, I/O, graphics, TSR's, and more. You could at one time get the "C Window's Toolkit" from Magna Charta software for $30 (regular > $100). It does windows and fast screen I/O.
