One possible fix for this problem (?), and only one of many might be to put a list in the non-modal dialog box with the names of the open & printable windows/documents if there are multiple windows open. This wouldn't be needed most of the time, but if, say, in a word processor, several open documents, this would be a straight-forward way of telling the software what you want to print.
