fonts I believe are found by X in /usr/lib/X11/fonts.  that is where
clients in the XNeXT distribution find them.  are you sure you are using
a valid fontname?  use xlsfonts to see what fonts you have.  I tried
this on my machine, and successfully used a 9x15 font with the command
line:

xterm -fn 9x15 &
