RN just wasn't built for "kill all but" article filtering.  The suggested
mechanism, as you say, doesn't work right, and would be slow even if it
did.

This was one of the motivations for NewsClip.  It can be found for anonymous
ftp in uunet!~ftp/ClariNet/nc.tar.Z -- it is shareware, though.
