I just posted stating that 1.5.5 would not boot on my machine.
Norbert Schlenker sent me e-mail saying that this could be due to the
broken ast(1).  And he was right!  I deleted kernel, commented out
the ast line in the Makefile and recompiled.  It now works fine.
I had forgotten that ast was used in the kernel Makefile.

Norbert speculated that this may also be the case with the "6 MHz PC AT
problem."
