On the other hand, I HATED the speakers on friends IBMs. What I did was I soldered a 12V DC Piezo buzzer to the two pins (J2 according to the manual) that are supposed to be for the external speaker. It's rather quiet (I like that, as I can easily drown it out by talking in a low voice, but if I NEED to hear the beep....)
