In general, the 1700 series of error codes refer to the hard drive subsystem.
Without more information (what model ps/2? does it boot? did you run ibm 
diagnostics?) I cannot be more specific. Try running some diagnostics or
swapping out parts to determine if the trouble is in the drive or in the
the drive controller.
