I am currently using a COMPAQ 286 LTE for this type of work. The one I
have has a 20mb hard drive 
and 1.64 MB of memory. While it does not have the ability to battery
backup the RAM disk, I have been very happy with it.  I have gotten more
that 4 hours worth of heavy use from a single battery, and carry a
second battery for longer use. (Have yet to use the second battery.)

I read a review of the 1000XE and according to the article the battery
life is 2 hours or less, for me that is not long enough.
