The problems that you describe are exactly the same as the ones that I see.
I am running 1.5.5 on a Compaq 386/20e with a built in VGA controller.  I
also see the problem on a Sperry MicroIT using a ATI VGA controller.  It
really doesn't appear to be a problem with the video controller.
