The grant being discussed here is not really intended for networking but rather to promote interest in and understanding of supercomputing. The network provides an inexpensive way for high schools to get access to the CRAY here by dialing into a local gateway at one of the research universities around the state. The pilot program included a supercomputing training session for teachers with the objective of showing them how to work supercomputing into their classes. The students and teacher then develop a project requiring supercomputing capabilities. It is considered important by the state education department to develop supercomputer interest at an early age so that when they get to the state universities they can fully utilize the supercomputer as part of their educational program. Anyway, the point of this long winded dessertation is that there are legitimate reasons for high schoolers to use internet even though that is not the ultimate goal. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dennis Putnam, Service Manager Boeing Computer Services Alabama Supercomputer Network +---------------------+ |UNA A&M | |NFDC-------C--UAH | | / \ | | | | JSU| | _____UAB-+----/ | | UA | | | | ____AU | | DSMD | | ASU | \ | | / TSU | | / | | / | | / | | _USA---------------+ |/ \_|
