Perhaps the file you grabbed from the FTP site was bad?  Also, (I'm not sure if this is true with Amiga ARC) but on Amiga Zip,
not all the compression routines are actually coded, so if one is encountered that Zip knows it cannot do, it will tell you:
-->ZIP DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO DE____(fill in the unsupported compression routine of your choice) YET!
[or something to that effect]
