Sounds like your drive is the culprit here. I think that the amiga drives have a failure mode that makes the drive writable in the event of the write detect failing. In other words, your drive can't tell whether the disk is protected or not anymore so it assumes that it is not protected in order to let you get some use out of it. It should be repaired.
