It is just a Red Herring. For your second problem with the forcefields and the Try Your Strength graffiti, throw something down the hall, if you throw it hard enough it wiil land on a pressure plate and open a door with some useful stuff behind it. As to the empty rooms you are not missing any thing really important, there is a secret passage opposite the cell in the beggining of that hall, try pushing all the hooks in that hall I hope this helps.
