Well, I just for the first time saw a description and photo of an
actual for sale 68040 based computer in Electronic Component News.

Paraphrased:
The Motorola MVME165 single board computer provides 20 mips, 3.5 mflops,
4-16 mbytes ram (burst mode), VME, VSB bus interface.  Prices start at
$3995.  

From the photo, it looks like you have to supply your own power supply,
case, backplane, etc.
