Check out Virtual INIT. Of course, while we're on the subject of why Apple can innovate the system software it would probably also do some justice to talk about the ease of making extensions (like Virtual INIT) to the system. I currently have about 20 INITs/CDEVs running on my SE without any problems whatsoever.
