The first discussion von neumann gives of trying to do self reproduction
of automata was in his talk "The General and Logical Theory of Automata"
to a symposium in Pasd{ena, CA in 1948.  See his Collect Works,
Vol. 5, Macmillan, NY , pp. 288 - 328.

Ulam's first published mention of his and von Neumann's plan to use
CAs appears in Ulam's 1950 essay, "Random Processes and Transformations,"
reprinted in his collected owrks, Sets, Numbers and Universes, MIT
press, pp. 326 - 337.
