In my previous posting I should have added :

There are two cases; Sun reference numbers (from Sun UK Technical Support)

i.	1017518 (patch available, fixed in 4.1)
ii.	1017893 (no patch yet)

Applying the patch supplied for (i) seems to have solved our "disk wait"
problems. So far :-)
