By "not displaying any picture" do you mean you see nothing but a big black void where you'd expect the image to be? I've been having the same problem with ppmtogif-created pictures on my Mac. Both xloadimage (patchlevel 3, yeah I know I probably oughta upgrade), and Vision Lab Demo show a completely black image when displaying an image I created with ppmtogif. It's looking like there may be a bug in ppmtogif somewhere, or at least a subtle incompatibility with many GIF-handling programs.
