My Panasonic telephone/answering machine combo records the ongoing conversation
with the push of a couple of buttons.  It is programmable to inject or not
inject the 15 second beep.  I think it defaults to 'not'.  To cover their
posterior they point out that it may be unlawful to secretly record the
conversation in some states.
