I don't know what the flip is wrong, so if My intention was to mail Brian today to tell him what I know, but someone else posted with the same problem. This happened to me when I was installing Bruce Evans' protected mode, and I cured it by updating all the files in [/lib /usr/lib] like head.s and so on.
