I have the same problem.  Standard NTSC monitors drive my hearing up the
wall unless I turn on a radio or some background noise.   By far the
quietest monitor I have ever used was an  IBM PS/2 model,    high-scan
rate VGA monitor.   I think they even work with the FlickerFixer.
