It is caused by the way the fan is designed, it seems as if it "floats" on a 1 point bearing, and until it gets up to speed, and it's gyroscopic effect keeps it level, it sometime hits it's housing.. But, however, it should be VERY quiet once it is going. and not only is it physically quieter, but since the rom 01 sound circcuitry is so poorly insulated, it makes a tremendous difference in sound quality. Apple's (cheap) fan causes all sorts of hisses and buzzes, especially in my setup, where I have my GS hooked up to my 150 WPC stereo!
