They will succesfully transfer information up to about 3 inches. There are two reasons the range is so short: 1.) A short range saves batteries 2.) Less important, an educators group objected to a long range in fear that students would use them to cheat on tests. These are the only real reasons I know. Although I haven't tried it myself, some people have suggested using one of those things you clip on to tv and stereo remotes to increase the range. If long range is important to you, this might help you out.
