This is as I suspected---it's most likely not the voltages.  In the original
message from maybe@igloo.scum.com (Jordan Gottlieb), I saw clear symptoms of
a baud rate mismatch, and that would be the first thing to check.  I tried
sending mail to that address, but it has gotten bounced back several times.
