A while ago, I asked for info on the PCX graphics file format, and also
on the VGA (fast programming techniques).  My summary:

PCX file format: 
Used by PC Paintbrush program, supported by ZSoft Corp.
Zsoft has a BBS, download TECHREF.TXT -- this has the file format defined.
The ZBBS phone number: 404-427-1045 and 404-424-3146 (300/1200/2400/9600PEP)

I have a copy of TECHREF.TXT, and can email on request.


VGA:
Recommended books are 

"Programmer's Guide to PC and PS/2 Video Systems" 
by Richard Wilton, Microsoft Press.

"Programmer's Guide to the EGA and VGA Cards"
by Richard F. Ferraro, Addison-Wesley. note: typos found in this
